ACE Free Work Isn’t Just for Reactive Dogs. It’s for Every Dog.
Enrichment-based dog activities in New Bern, NC
When people hear “ACE Free Work,” they usually assume it’s for reactive dogs.
I get it. That’s how most people find out about it—their dog is lunging, barking, or shutting down, and someone says, “Have you tried ACE Free Work?”
But here’s what I’ve learned after years of working with dogs of every age, temperament, and background: Every dog needs this. Not just the reactive ones. Not just the anxious ones.
Every. Dog.
I’m Jeanne Crockett, owner of Crockett’s Critter Care and the first and only ACE Free Work Trainer in North Carolina. Let me tell you what ACE Free Work actually is—and why your dog, whatever their personality, deserves it.
ACE Free Work is a low-pressure enrichment activity where your dog moves through a thoughtfully designed setup of objects—completely on their own terms.
The setup looks simple from the outside. Everyday items. Different textures and surfaces. Some food. But what makes it work isn’t the objects themselves—it’s knowing how to read what your dog is telling you while they move through it.
There are no commands. No corrections. No expectations. Your dog chooses what to investigate, what to skip, and how long to linger. And a trained eye watches every second of it.
That’s it. And yet what happens in those few minutes is anything but simple.
The magic of ACE Free Work isn’t in the equipment. It’s in the choice—and in understanding what those choices mean.
When a dog gets to make real decisions—I’ll go here, I’ll skip that, I want to sniff this longer—something shifts in their nervous system. Their body settles. Their brain engages. They stop waiting to be told what to do and start trusting themselves.
That kind of calm confidence can’t be trained with commands. It has to be experienced. And it has to be guided by someone who knows what they’re looking at.
1. The High-Energy Dog
You know this dog. They’re go-go-go from the moment they wake up. More walks don’t seem to help. More exercise just creates a dog who needs more exercise.
Why it matters: ACE Free Work asks the brain to work, not just the body. That mental effort is genuinely tiring—in the best way. Dogs who do regular Free Work sessions often settle at home in a way that an extra mile on the leash never quite achieves.
2. The Senior Dog
Older dogs slow down physically, but their need for mental engagement doesn’t disappear. In fact, it often grows.
Why it matters: Free Work is gentle on aging joints and rich for an aging brain. A few minutes of purposeful, supported exploration does more for their well-being than you might expect.
3. The Puppy
Puppies are learning how to exist in a world that is constantly surprising. Everything is new. Everything is a lot.
Why it matters: ACE Free Work teaches puppies from the very beginning that new things can be interesting rather than scary. That early lesson—that curiosity is safe—shapes how they handle the world for the rest of their lives.
4. The “Fine” Dog
Maybe your dog isn’t reactive. Isn’t anxious. Isn’t a behavior challenge at all. They’re just… good.
Why it matters: Even the most well-adjusted dog spends most of their day waiting for something to happen. ACE Free Work gives them something genuinely theirs—no handler agenda, no right answer, just pure exploration.
When you bring your dog in for an ACE Free Work session, I design the environment specifically for them—their age, their history, their temperament, and where they are that day.
I watch how they move. What they gravitate toward. What they avoid. Where they slow down. Where they rush. Every choice your dog makes is information, and knowing how to interpret that information is what separates a meaningful session from just letting a dog wander around a room.
You’ll be there too—learning what to look for, understanding your dog in a way you may never have before. Most clients tell me it’s one of the most eye-opening experiences they’ve had with their dog.
And it’s available to every dog. Not just the reactive ones.
I offer ACE Free Work sessions here in New Bern, NC, for dogs of every age, temperament, and background. If you’ve been curious about what this work could do for your dog—reactive or not—let’s talk.
